A comparison of different soft-computing techniques for the evaluation of handball goalkeepers.
(Springer, 2022) Angulo Sánchez-Herrera, Eusebio; Romero Chicharro, Francisco Pascual; López Gómez, Julio Alberto
The efficiency of handball goalkeepers is a good predictor of team ranking in tournaments, but despite this, very few studies have been carried out into the performance characteristics of elite goalkeepers. This paper provides the criteria for evaluating a handball goalkeeper and applies a variety of soft-computingmethodologies for estimating their weights. More specifically, a fuzzy multi-criteria decision-making method, a metaheuristic optimisation algorithm, and statistical and domain-knowledgebased methods were used to evaluate the actions of goalkeepers during the game. Computer experiments were performed for all the proposed methodologies, using data from the 2020 European Men’s Handball Championship, in order to estimate the weights of the indicators.

A cooperative heterogeneous vehicular clustering framework for efficiency improvement.
(Springer, 2021) Ahmad, Iftikhar; Noor, Rafidah Md; Ahmed, Zaheed; Habiba, Umm-e; Akram, Naveed; García Márquez, Fausto Pedro
Heterogeneous vehicular clustering integrates multiple types of communication networks to work efficiently for various vehicular applications. One popular form of heterogeneous network is the integration of long-term evolution (LTE) and dedicated short-range communication. The heterogeneity of such a network infrastructure and the non-cooperation involved in sharing cost/data are potential problems to solve. A vehicular clustering framework is one solution to these problems, but the framework should be formally verified and validated before being deployed in the real world. To solve these issues, first, we present a heterogeneous framework, named destination and interest-aware clustering, for vehicular clustering that integrates vehicular ad hoc networks with the LTE network for improving road traffic efficiency. Then, we specify a model system of the proposed framework. The model is formally verified to evaluate its performance at the functional level using a model checking technique. To evaluate the performance of the proposed framework at the micro-level, a heterogeneous simulation environment is created by integrating state-of-the-art tools. The comparison of the simulation results with those of other known approaches shows that our proposed framework performs better.

Can hybrid strategy improve SME performance? The role of innovation and adaptive capacity
(Emerald, 2024) Gutiérrez Broncano, Santiago; Linuesa Langreo, Jorge; Rubio Andrés, Mercedes; Sastre Castillo, Ángel
Purpose – This article focusses on the hybrid strategy, a simultaneous combination of cost leadership and differentiation strategy. The study aims to examine the impact of hybrid strategy on firm performance through its anticipated positive effects on process and product innovation. In addition, we study the moderating role of adaptive capacity in the direct relationships of hybrid strategy with process and product innovation. Design/methodology/approach – Structural equation modelling was used to analyse 1,842 Spanish firms with fewer than 250 employees. We randomly selected small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) operating in Spain from the Spanish Central Business Directory (2021) database. The overall sample design was based on stratified sampling. Findings – We found that hybrid strategy is positively related to firm performance and to process and productinnovation. Additionally, in firms implementing hybrid strategies, process innovation fostered firm performance. Finally, adaptive capacity strengthened the relationships of hybrid strategy with process and productinnovation. This sheds light on how and when hybrid strategy is most effective in fostering SME performance. Practical implications – We highlight that SMEs need to establish strategies that use diverse resources andcapabilities and not just generate competitive advantage using one strategy (cost leadership or differentiationstrategy). This requires an agile and flexible systems and structures. Originality/value – Our research provides novel results by proposing the adoption of hybrid strategies insteadof pure strategies (cost leadership and differentiation strategy) as a way for SMEs to survive during crises. Unlike“stuck in the middle” strategies, our study demonstrates the importance of hybrid strategies in a comprehensive model that links them to innovation and firm performance, with adaptive capacity being a determining factor.

Meeting 24-h movement guidelines: Prevalence, correlates, and associations with socioemotional behavior in Spanish minors.
(Wiley, 2022) López Gil, José Francisco; Román Viñas, Blanca; Aznar Laín, Susana; Tremblay, Mark S.
The aims of this study were to determine for the first time the prevalence of a national sample of Spanish minors meeting the 24-h movement guidelines; to determine their correlates; and to examine their associations with socioemotional behavioral problems. Cross-sectional data from the Spanish National Health Survey (2017) were analyzed for this study. A total of 3772 Spanish minors were included. Physical activity was parent-reported by a modified short version of the International Physical Activity Questionnaire, which included a single question related to the participation in physical activity in free time.
