Can hybrid strategy improve SME performance? The role of innovation and adaptive capacity
(Emerald, 2024) Gutiérrez Broncano, Santiago; Linuesa Langreo, Jorge; Rubio Andrés, Mercedes; Sastre Castillo, Ángel
Purpose – This article focusses on the hybrid strategy, a simultaneous combination of cost leadership and differentiation strategy. The study aims to examine the impact of hybrid strategy on firm performance through its anticipated positive effects on process and product innovation. In addition, we study the moderating role of adaptive capacity in the direct relationships of hybrid strategy with process and product innovation. Design/methodology/approach – Structural equation modelling was used to analyse 1,842 Spanish firms with fewer than 250 employees. We randomly selected small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) operating in Spain from the Spanish Central Business Directory (2021) database. The overall sample design was based on stratified sampling. Findings – We found that hybrid strategy is positively related to firm performance and to process and productinnovation. Additionally, in firms implementing hybrid strategies, process innovation fostered firm performance. Finally, adaptive capacity strengthened the relationships of hybrid strategy with process and productinnovation. This sheds light on how and when hybrid strategy is most effective in fostering SME performance. Practical implications – We highlight that SMEs need to establish strategies that use diverse resources andcapabilities and not just generate competitive advantage using one strategy (cost leadership or differentiationstrategy). This requires an agile and flexible systems and structures. Originality/value – Our research provides novel results by proposing the adoption of hybrid strategies insteadof pure strategies (cost leadership and differentiation strategy) as a way for SMEs to survive during crises. Unlike“stuck in the middle” strategies, our study demonstrates the importance of hybrid strategies in a comprehensive model that links them to innovation and firm performance, with adaptive capacity being a determining factor.

Meeting 24-h movement guidelines: Prevalence, correlates, and associations with socioemotional behavior in Spanish minors.
(Wiley, 2022) López Gil, José Francisco; Román Viñas, Blanca; Aznar Laín, Susana; Tremblay, Mark S.
The aims of this study were to determine for the first time the prevalence of a national sample of Spanish minors meeting the 24-h movement guidelines; to determine their correlates; and to examine their associations with socioemotional behavioral problems. Cross-sectional data from the Spanish National Health Survey (2017) were analyzed for this study. A total of 3772 Spanish minors were included. Physical activity was parent-reported by a modified short version of the International Physical Activity Questionnaire, which included a single question related to the participation in physical activity in free time.

Effects of chronic metformin treatment on training adaptations in men and women with hyperglycemia:
(Wiley, 2022) Moreno Cabañas, Alfonso; Morales Palomo, Felix; Alvarez Jimenez, Laura; Ortega Fonseca, Juan Fernando; Mora Rodriguez, Ricardo
This study aimed to determine whether chronic metformin use interferes with the improvements in insulin resistance (IR) and cardiorespiratory fitness with aerobic training in people with hyperglycemia and metabolic syndrome (MetS).

Closing the loop through eco-innovation by European firms:
(Wiley, 2022) Triguero Cano, Ángela; Cuerva Narro, María del Carmen; Sáez Martínez, Francisco José
The purpose of this paper is to analyze the factors influencing the adoption of environmental innovations towards a circular economy (CE) by the EU firms, with special focus on technological capabilities and external support. A multivariate probit model is specified to allow the distinction between three types of eco-innovative practices: Reduce, Recycle, and Redesign technological processes. Using a novel taxonomy based upon the distinction between narrowing, closing, and slowing loops in the use of resources, we find that financial and technological capabilities are essential drivers for all types of CE actions in the European firms.

4-(2-Hydroxyphenyl) imidazolium salts as organocatalysts for cycloaddition of isocyanates and epoxides to yield oxazolidin-2-ones
(Wiley, 2022) Caballero, María P.; Carrascosa, Fernando; Cruz Martínez, Felipe; Castro Osma, José A.; Rodríguez, Ana M.; North, Michael; Lara Sánchez, Agustín; Tejeda Sojo, Juan
Novel salts based on 1,3-dibutyl-4-(2-hydroxyphenyl)-1H-imidazolium bromide or iodide have been developed as bifunctional organocatalysts for the cycloaddition reaction of epoxides and isocyanates to form 3,4- and 3,5-disubstituted oxazolidin-2-ones. The molecular structure of these compounds was determined spectroscopically and confirmed by X-ray diffraction analysis.
